About Taekwondo

Tae- Kicking, Kwon- Striking with fist, Do- The Way

The Martial Art of Taekwondo means, "The Way of Fist and Foot Fighting." Although an ancient and once secret Korean art of weaponless self-defense, it is now a Korean sport in which either two persons practice methods of unarmed fighting or one person can exercise for both physical fitness and self-defense. Though primarily a defensive art of self-protection, Taekwondo has most recently developed into an international competitive sport. Taekwondo features free-fighting combat, using bare hands and feet to subdue the opponent.

Taekwondo has been called the ultimate in self-defense because it trains reflexes so keen and accurate that a student can effectively defend themselves from attack by multiple assailants; yet, they are also able to spar vigorously with fellow students without heavy protective garments and in complete safety. Other benefits attached to Taekwondo are good health, physical fitness, superior concentration, patience, and emphasis on positive values.

Unlike most other sporting activities, Taekwondo promotes the improved formation of one's character. The Taekwondo master teaches the importance of both physical and mental conditioning by building up his student's self-confidence, self-respect, and self-discipline. The dance-like rhythm of this incredible art, especially during the practice of intricate forms, is a pleasure to watch. When free-sparring, punches and kicks are controlled and good technique is shown, one can see this is not a street brawl. After an intensive workout, not only does one's pulse and breathing rate get pushed to the limit, but also one's spirit needs to be calmed through meditation.

Although knowing valuable self-defense skills generates a tremendous sense of security, the true Martial Artist should be able to walk away from potential or threatening fight situations without a loss of self-esteem. Ultimately, a sound mind in a sound body will succeed at its life's calling.

  • "Master Lee is a great teacher and role model. I love that there are great programs targeted specifically for teenagers and black belts. At many schools, once you get your black belt, there are no real further challenges. This is not the case at USTC! There is so much more to learn beyond black belt. My teenage son has really enjoyed being a part of the USTC family. " -Tracy Miller Jackson

  • "Great training environment for both young and adult " -Phillip Michael Gomez
